Message banner on Fitbit app

At the bottom of my mobile app dashboard on the right hand side of the tool bar is an icon labeled notifications. This icon has a red circle with a 1 in it. I am guessing it is telling me I have 1 notification. When I tap on the notification icon the Notifications screen comes up and it divided into two categories titled NOTIFICATIONS and MESSAGES. With the notifications side highlighted I see a string of messages mainly pertaining to my step goals. The MESSAGES header has a red circle with a 1 in it, as well as the toolbar notifications at the bottom of the screen. When I tap on the MESSAGES side, I see no messages, the red circle is no longer showing on the MESSAGES column header but is still  visible on the Notifications icon on the toolbar.  What's going on here?
