No Text Message Notifications via Google Messages App

I noticed a few months ago my text messages were coming in to my Charge 2 with just the sender name, not the message itself.  Then about 1-2 months ago message notifications stopped entirely.  I realized after some troubleshooting and testing that the reason is the Google Messages text app.  When I switch to the Samsung Messages text app I get the notifications and full message just fine.  I tried uninstalling / re-installing both the Fitbit and Google Messages apps with no success.  It seems one of them is not compatible with the other for some reason.  Are there any work arounds anyone knows of?  Or will this be fixed in a future update?  Thanks.
