Happy the BMR explanation helped.

As to the 31 steps... I could see it picking up a few steps from the motion of picking it up and putting it on but 31 seems a bit high for that.

Fitbit resets the calories at midnight. It then begins to estimate your calorie expenditure based on your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR uses your stats (sex, age, height, weight...) to estimate calorie usage. It does this even if you don't wear the device as this is the baseline calorie usage even if you are passed out on the couch. You can check the accuracy of the BMR by going to various BMR estimation sites on the web. Any activity calories then get added on top of the BMR.
