I'm trying to set up my Fitbit (Christmas present). The phone face directs me to fitbit.com/setup. That site directs me to my phone app. My phone app just shows me a "today" screen. I can't figure out how to get back to setup or what to do next so I can start wearing and using this darn thing.

That sounds like you have not yet completed the setup process.
If you select your profile image at the top left of the "Today" screen you'll go to the account section of the app. There you can select "Set up a device". Choose your fitbit model and it will step you through the process, at the end of which you should be ready to go.
