Hello,
By way of background, I'm currently a somewhat disappointed Apple Watch Series 4 user. I just found out that the Green Exercise Ring (I think equivalent to the Activity Circle on FitBit Versa) doesn’t advance if my heart rate doesn’t stay above 130 bpm, if I’m doing a non-walking/running exercise. It was my first recumbent trike ride of the year so I cruised along at 10 mph and had purposely limited my HR to under 130 BPM. Of my 70 minute long ride, I discovered that my Series 4 had only recorded 10 minutes! Apparently those were the times I'd exceeded 130 bpm.
Since I'm 75 years old, 130 bpm is about 90% of my theoretical maximum (225-75)! I try to maintain 85% over my usual 44 mile rides and 4 mile Nordic-Walks but 90% seems a bit much.
Thus, my question: How does FitBit's algorithm track non-running/walking exercise? Is it heart rate dependent? Obviously, the A-W will happily track my 4 mile Nordic-Walks and give me complete credit for the hour or so of effort. I'm just hunting for a wearable that will be more encouraging in tracking my cycling.
Thanks,
Bill

@Popcorn-Billy If I understand your question, I'm sure the answer is yes. Outdoor cycling can be tracked with the Exercise app and it is an auto-recognized exercise. I prefer using the Exercise app. It has an auto pause feature. I think there is more consistent tracking with app.
The only reason to get the Special Edition is if you plan to use Fitbit Pay -- contactless payment. Not all banks and cards participate. You should check here. A waste of money if you don't plan on using it or your bank doesn't participate.

@Popcorn-Billy Based on your description of your Apple Watch experience, I think the real question you are asking is -- "how does Fitbit calculate active minutes?"
Certainly, all the algorithms are proprietary, but Fitbit uses an effort (intensity) method for calculating active minutes. The basis is the Metabolic Equivalent (MET). One MET of activity is you completely at rest. When you have sustained activity at or above three METs for 10 minutes, you will get active minutes. An example of a three MET activity is a brisk walk. MET charts typically give biking at 10 mph four METs.
I am confident that a Fitbit with a heart rate sensor like the Versa/Versa Lite would have given you all 70 minutes of your ride as active minutes.
Late last year, the CDC changed its recommendation for 10 minutes at a time to a just get up and move approach. Fitbit still has the 10 minute minimum before awarding active minutes.
Here is a link to help you learn more about active minutes.

LZeeW,
If I were to select "Cycling" in "Exercise," would the MET algorithm act the same? I'm not concerned about my Nordic-Walking. Apple Watch will record that accurately. I just want a smartwatch that will track everything accurately. After watching RIZKnows comparison of the Series 4 and the Versa, I think I bought the wrong watch....
Just so you know, I just ordered a Versa Special Edition. I decided to give it a try and sell the watch that doesn't meet my needs or keep both and use them for the activities for which they are most suited.
Thanks,
Bill

Thanks, LZeeW.
My banks and cards do participate. I'm looking forward to getting my Versa set up tomorrow.
