Versa 3 suddenly massively overcounting steps

I've had my Versa 3 for just over a year, and yesterday it overestimated steps during a walk, then corrected itself. Today, it has done the same overestimation, but failed to correct it. When I look at the App, the steps counting during a walk seem appropriate, but the daily total is 1000s more than it should be. The total for today is apparently 30,010, but the 5 periods of walking total only 18,542 (1,376 + 1,419 + 11,787 +3,147 + 813). There's no way that I have done 13,000 incidental steps! I've tried rebooting the watch twice and restarting the app and my phone.  Maybe the 3-axis accelerometer is faulty???

My Versa 3 has also been randomly overcounting and adjusting step count since 2nd March. A half hour ago I was clocking 6481 steps, and after working at my desk for half an hour, I've managed to lose steps and I'm now 6295. Step counting is such a basic feature!

Since this is the one feature I rely on for my weekly exercise, I'm finding this massively frustrating.

I bought this Versa 3 a couple of months ago after I suffered the well-documented white-line problem with my Versa 2. I have bought about 5 Fitbits in the last few years, all have suffered from common problems.

This is making me think it's time to shift to another brand.

I've had this happen to me a couple times as well. The count on my watch would be around 4000, but the app shows 7000. After restarting the app and syncing several times, it would correct it.

Mine has been doing the same every day for about a fortnight. It only seems to happen when I walk for more than 10 minutes. I've taken to counting manually which is ridiculous. Anyone got a solution yet? I've tried resets but it is clearly not individual devices.

That's exactly what they told me on Twitter fitbit support. Like I haven't done that already.

Wonder if it’s from the latest apple os update. I almost bought a new device as I thought it was getting ready to quit working

I don’t think so because many posting on here are Android users.

I hope they fix it. I’m pretty much assuming that for me it will start
glitching after about 30 minutes of exercise, first by about .70 miles,
then in increments of .90 miles. My usual 7 miles ends up looking anywhere
between 13 and 14 miles then adjusts back down. Calorie burn does not seem
to be impacted. Just wish it would sync faster. Is there a setting for
that?

Hi to any new posters in this topic, the bug is fully outlined in the first post here Unreliable step counting bug

It is something ONLY Google can fix at their end and is not related to any device, phone or app, or update to them at the user end.

They have been working on essential metric bug for several weeks.

It doesn't explain how it got introduced in the first place or why it doesn't appear as fault in the official Fitbit Status Dashboard

I've contacted Fitbit today regarding this issue. After challenging them they are aware of this issue and are trying to correct it. Suppose to have corrected in a few weeks. I recommended that they send an email or text message to end users of the current problem and potential repair time. We'll see

I'm glad they are working on a fix, thank you for the update.  I noticed it started happening to me after moving from the Fitbit to Google side on the app.  My weekend walks have been the same 9ish miles a day, but now when I get home I have 38k+ steps instead of my 21k, but it self corrects within an hour. I thought for sure this was Google's way of trying to make me buy a new watch.

Unfortunately that's what they have been saying for weeks now it's obviously not very high on their to do list 😕

I'll just say it. If it doesn't bring them profit , they'll look into is as soon as possible.

Mine started doing the same after the recent firmware update.  It overcounted so much yesterday that the app sent me a message to slow down and rest !!!

Mine is doing odd things with steps as well. It's been happening for maybe a couple of weeks or more. Thought I was crazy so I took screenshots of my steps on the app throughout the day. It would add too many, take them away and then add more that seemed like appropriate amounts, then take them away again and so on. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was just correcting itself when syncing, but at the end of the day my step count is less than it should be.

Good luck with contacting support. They just tell you to do all the things I've already done like restarts, app updating, software update, Bluetooth connection check, etc, etc.  I've used fitbits for so long that I already know all the troubleshooting stuff but nothing works. My husband's is doing the same thing and it's a newer, better model than mine.

For about a week and as of today it’s still a problem. I was walk-in this morning and had about 6500 steps when it suddenly told me I had reached 10000. Hour or so later it reverted to what I think is correct of about 7700. Usually it will jump a few thousand steps a few times during the day. Yesterday I went over 10000 three or four times. The last one was the only valid one.

Thank God I'm not going crazy 😜  this has been happening to me for almost 2 weeks. I tried to ask other Fitbit users I know & they couldn't understand what I was talking about.  I sadly fear this is a way to render our Fitbits useless

Same issue here. Really frustrating!

Having the same issue. Today, for example, as I left the house for a walk, my step count was at about 4,000. I walked for 3.5 km at least. My stride is about 70cm. So a 3.5 km walk should have brought me 5,000 steps for a total of 9,000. As I approached home, I look at the watch and it was at 8,200. This seemed a little low. I opened my phone and refreshed the app, and suddenly on the app it was showing 10,700. I immediately looked at my watch and out of nowhere the watch jumped from the 8,200 steps to the confetti screen for having reached my 10k goal. I get back to the apartment. Glance at my phone. Now it says just over 11,000 but before my eyes drops down to 8,800. I grab milk from convenience store downstairs. Come back. It says 9,000. And again before my eyes it randomly drops back to 8,977. Wtf. If my Fitbit can’t track steps properly anymore – which, you’d have to say, is about the most basic function of a Fitbit – then (1) what else is not accurate, and (2) what is even the point of using google/fitbit products?

It appears as though they are trying to move users to a newer platform.
As I stated to their customer service team just let users know that they are no longer going to support this product or update software.

This started happening to me ever since the mandatory upgrade to fix the "battery issue". It is a terrible defect. Because of it I have missed a few days of getting 10,000 steps because I trusted the step count to be accurate and it NEVER is. I have to sync 3 times to get the accurate count. It's weird because the wrong step count shows in the app but also on my watch.  How do we get them to fix this issue? It makes me want to leave fitbit for a different platform all together. It's sad because I've had my various fit bits for over 10 years!

Totally agree, I have just been in contact with fitbit support on twitter, and after going through the pointless exercise of stopping the app turning off and on fitbit uncoupling the phone from the fitbit .they now say they are aware off the problem and are working on it.
