Are you talking about walking down the street or on a treadmill? On a treadmill, I found the problem to be the habit of holding on to both handles with both hands. This meant that my arms weren't swinging as they normally would when walking. I wear my Versa on my left wrist, so now, I only hold onto the treadmill bar with my right hand and let my left arm swing normally. That fixed the step counting problem.
