I have Ionic's and Versa 4's and have participated in this forum. It's clear to me that after all of this time Fitbit/Google will do what they want not what the community wants. So I'm out. I bought a watch made by a GPS company and I'm very happy with it. Much more accurate without the communication errors that plague FitBit. I presume that sooner or later Fitbit will be folded into Google Health and the store folded in to Google Play as Nest has been folded into Google Home. Google has enough data from me without my heart rate, location, weight etc.
Apologies in advance for the rant, I was ignoring this but the flood of daily emails updates triggered me.
I joined this feature suggestion topic a few years ago and at the time it was still open for consideration by Fitbit. In my specific situation, I already had a charge 2 and was gifted another charge 2 so returning the second device was not an option and anyway I thought it would be great to have a second device for many practical reasons such as ....
1. Not wanting to wear the same watch I use for gym or work and when going out
2. Having a backup (I had 2 fail on me, charge hr and change 2)
3. Those situations where you forgot to charge but just decided to go for a long run
I'm sure there are other valid reasons and this will vary for different people, I have identical devices, so an even more unlikely scenario, but if you have different devices with different features, it makes even more sense. I don't think it should matter why anyone would want a second device, nor is it reasonable to argue against its merits or try to suggest its somehow a negative to support this. It's even a win for Fitbit, so as a feature, this is a no brainer.
I didn't spend the time looking back at what the last message was from Fitbit on this feature request, I do recall them closing the topic and saying something like it won't be implemented because lack of interest, correct me if I am wrong on that, but I think that is what irritates most people. To be told its not useful or important to add a feature when you own and use that product and have presented a genuine/practical reason for an obvious feature that similar products already have. It is hard to gauge how many people will really benefit from this or if the ROI on implementing the changes would make it worth it, but its clearly an oversight to lack support for multiple devices and I bet if a poll was properly conducted asking people if they thought it should be a feature, the result would be in favour of it.
I also don't understand why 'difficult to implement' keeps being brought up. This thread is for feature suggestions, not a 'debate the complexity of feature implementation discussion' and to be fair, if other fitness trackers are able to do it, blaming it on software (or firmware) seems a bit weak for a company that positioned itself as the market leader. It's also an admission that their platform is inherently inferior and incapable of evolving with the needs of its customers. Of course, I'm not sure if this is the official reason given or that was an assumption and is now just being parroted, but if true, you would expect Fitbit to see this as a potential weakness its the long term strategy and even if they don't address it in the short term, let customers know its something that can or will be fixed in future. This is a tech product in a tech industry, not being able to fix a software problem does not inspire long term confidence, especially when people are using it to capture and analyse data over a lifetime and it can influence their purchasing decision.
Give me a valid argument as to why the feature would be a negative or detract from other peoples use of the device and I am open to listening and re-assessing my position on the need for this feature.
I am open to being corrected on this (by Fitbit, please no more speculation), but the conclusion seems to be very simple
1. Fitbit has no plan to implement this
2. If you need multiple device support, don't buy Fitbit
3. If you purchased a second device thinking you could use it at the same time, return it and get a refund
4. If you are disappointed in how Fitbit has handled this, don't buy Fitbit again in future
As consumers we have choices, unfortunately in some product categories only bad ones, but I'm hopeful that there are still some companies out there that listen and it's always possible for new ones to grow when the established ones become too big to adapt. Stay safe everyone!
@DrRobin : Thank you for your post. It's like you read my mind or looked into my personal timeline. Your scenario is exactly what I did before purchasing a brand new Flex2 to add to my Fitbit account. I had an Alta and Flex2 on the same account, but the Alta died. So, I performed the steps you described before purchasing a second Flex2. I very much liked the idea of having to deal with only ONE type of charging station for home, car, and business trips. After several Tech Support calls to Fitbit, I am stuck with the second useless Flex 2. All Fitbit Tech Support personnel insisted that I should be able to install the second Fitbit using the website installation procedure. 😒
Excellent rant on this subject. Well thought out reasoning. Personally, I would like to have two of the exact same Fitbit models, because:
1. Only have to deal and carry ONE charging station type. 2. Only have to deal with having ONE wristband type. 3. Only have to deal with ONE type of features.
It is a royal pain to have to carry two different charging stations on business trips, through airports, and attaching to cars for charging.
It would be nice to be able to have two of one type (Flex 2), then a second model (Alta) on the same account.
@Goegoe, I'm confused by your statement "not all my ytd steps came over"...
I was merely stating that you can switch from one device to another by simply adding the second device.
Did you establish two accounts (with two separate e-mails) and use both devices? If so then they're distinctly apart and you can't combine the totals easily. You may be able to contact support to try to get them merged, but I'm skeptical.
Like I mentioned before the activity is tied to the account, not the device. If you move tracker to a new account (much like if you give your device to your friend), then all it means that any new activity on that tracker is now recording on their account; they don't get all your history. This is intentional.
I've had a fitbit device since 2014. I'm currently using the Versa2. I would love the new Charge 4 as well, to wear during evenings out, and leave the Versa 2 at home. The Charge 4 being a smaller more discreate device.
But not being able to have both my fitbit devices on the same account, is preventing me from buying the Charge 4.
I think Fitbit maybe missing an opportunity to sell more products here.
"you have to borrow another phone. Log in to same account, remove all devices, and add both tracker using both phone. Now you have 2 tracker in one account."
I completely agree. This feature could definitely boost Fitbit's sales. I recently purchased a Versa2 and already had a Ionic. I guess I should have checked first to see if I could have more than one device on my account. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed when I setup my new device and it wiped out my old one. Not cool...not cool at all. Additionally, I had to go back through the time consuming process of setting my Ionic back up on the account after I decided I wanted to stick with that device. It also did not maintain all of my personal settings and I had to spend time resetting those. Now I have a watch that won't get much use unless I decide to just switch up for a while.
This feature really should be put on the priority list. It's pretty disappointing having a $200 device sitting around and not being used. I wonder if I can return it and get my money back.
I agree the only way is to have two different emails. I probably will switch to apple I'm sick of all these dumb excuses. I just cant believe they wont add versa 2 to the insurance program.
Hi @Chronzon, thanks for explaining why you would like to have the option to allow multiple devices on the same Fitbit account. I've moved it into a similar suggestion which has been updated as "Under Consideration". You can learn more about it here. Keep adding these suggestions.
I think that being able to switch easily between smart watches and trackers without having to add/remove them each time is a smart thing to have. You have different moods, events, work environments, etc. that you may want or need to wear a different Fitbit watch for or you can't wait for one watch to charge so you want to put on a different one. I have an Ionic that I like wear but I'm getting a Charge 4 soon that I'm going to wear more for my training and sports. I am also thinking I may like to get a Versa 2, so being able to easily take one watch off and put on another and just go would be an important improvement over taking time to add and remove them in the app.
I really like fitbit, and enjoy switching between multiple trackers. But that limits me to older trackers - the newer fitbits use Fitbit Gallery, and you can only have one on your account at a time.
Hi @LarryInSeattle, thanks for explaining why you would like to have the option to allow multiple devices on the same account. I've moved it into a similar suggestion which has been updated as "Under Consideration". You can learn more about it here. I hope to see you around.
