Dynamic retrieval and display of all daily nutrition values

Here is an opportunity for Fitbit project managers and developers to provide a greatly needed service to their device users, many of which would appreciate Fitbit’s assistance in managing their health.

Many of the users of Fitbit devices have real health issues and have to monitor different elements of their nutritional intake throughout the day. Other users have also voiced their desire to have a dynamically viewable recap of just where they stand at any point in the day.

Individuals with heart issues quite often need to be aware of their sodium intake or risk heart failure. And if truth be told, everyone else should be a little more aware of their sodium intake, as well.

Diabetics and pre-Diabetics need to keep abreast of their sugar intake throughout the day, not just at the day end. And for anyone wanting to lose a little, or even a lot, of weight should be watching their sugar intake, because what sugar cannot be used by muscles gets stored as fat.

Many people are literally afraid to eat out with friends or family sometimes because they are not positive about their current daily intake of a particular nutrient. Many spur-of-the-moment social opportunities are lost because they don’t know their current sodium or sugar totals for the day.

Why not, from the food log page of the Fitbit app have the Macronutrients icon be a touchable hotspot that would display this:

Daily Totals.png

The data in the graphic represents my actual intake on 1/19/2018 with the exception of vitamin and other base elements, but all of the information is available for quick retrieval from the Fitbit servers. And to quote Fitbit, “Your data belongs to you!”

I personally would be quite happy if that is all that was done, and as a first release it would be great. But it would be totally feasible to incorporate other requests for allowing the entry of target values for many of the nutrients shown in the label above. Values such as Calories, Carbs, Protein and Sodium. A new column next to “% Daily Value” called “Your Target” or just “Target” could be added.

Thank you Fitbit for having the Custom Foods creation capability that allowed be to create a food that actually represents my booked food totals for 1/19/2018.

I recently started logging the foods I am eating on my new diet and I think it would be great if I could share a full list of the foods I log with another fitbit user (or even my friends list). If I wanted to show my nutritionist what I've been eating, this would be a really handy feature.

Is there already a way to do this? I didn't see an option for it.

I miss the tracking possibilities for vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Hi @SunsetRunner! Great suggestion, thanks for sharing your idea. I've moved it into a similar request. You might also interested on this other suggestions: See Vitamin/Mineral data in Food log and Log and Track Medications (or Vitamins etc), you can show your interest by clicking on the thumbs up. I agree having the total sodium content available in the app would be very helpful for those on a heart healthy diet and is limited to a certain amount of sodium per day. It's a nice feature on the website, just wish that same information was available in the app.

Cholesterol tracking would be highly useful to me as well. I am trying to stay within 200 mg per day (per NIH guidelines, https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/files/docs/public/heart/chol_tlc.pdf).

I searched for this topic and I’m glad to see that others have the same ask. I Just got good at logging food using Fitbit app to track my in/out calories. That’s working well for me, but since I go through all the effort to log, I’d really like to see daily micronutrient totals in-app, as well as the macros in units I can select other than just %. For example, if I’m lifting really hard, I want to see my protein total in grams.

Thankyou Fitbit Team!

Yes please! Cholesterol tracking would make Fitbit my ultimate one-stop-shop. Heart

Great idea. I want to track saturated fat. But do Fitbit monitor this forum and actually take notice of people’s suggestions? I notice that when creating a new food item, there are 31 different nutrients that can be input. But only 7 show on the dashboard. We should be able to choose our own 7 items. Shouldn’t be too difficult.

I really want this - I've been playing with another tracker and their nutrient reports are really cool, and really made me think about getting rnough fiber and potassium, etc. I've attached a couple of screenshots to show what they can tell. I got way to much salt yesterday.  The "View more details" screen is from this morning after a coffee and a banana. The details screen goes on with all the items mentioned in the summary screen.

I would like to be able to see the total amount of each nutrient and vitamin I have taken in for the day and also a chart showing my trends and also information on which foods I eat the most and which ones are highest in different things like fat, sugar, sodium, etc.

Hi @ShainaW88! Great suggestion, thanks for taking the time to share why you would like to see this nutrition information. I've moved it into a similar suggestion. Hopefully we will have support from other users since more votes and comments an idea has the more visibility and momentum it gains.

SUPER important.
What's the use of all this community and family group fitness communication via all social media apps if you can't even share nutrition with your loved ones and friends?

It would be useful if total fibre for the day was logged rather than for each serving in the food log under nutrition.

Nice suggestion, thanks for sharing @jaywtravel! I agree that it would be useful to log the total amount of fibre for the day. We look forward to hearing what other community members think about having this option. Woman Wink

So critical to usefulness of the nutrition app. Currently using third party apps instead as lack of this simple feature is a dealbreaker.

Agree - my number one goal with fitbit is to lower my cholesterol and keep heart healthy.  Fitbit could help by making food selections or judging foods eaten.  And also allow cholesterol results to be entered in the fitbit.   Thank you!

I totally agree, I enter all my food information for the day then have to go through each individual item again to add them up on my calculator app to compare to GDAs that I'm monitoring. This is a total pain when the information is already available, it just has to be totalled up and displayed.
I've been using the free version of LifeSum along with FitBit to do this, but I'd much rather have everything available in the FitBit app as LifeSum doesn't take into account how much or little exercise I've done that day - unless I pay for premium which I don't want to do.

I’ve never used LiFeSum. I do the same with FatSecrets. It shows, sodium, fiber sugar, macros and stuff.

Very disappointed to see that I can only view total sodium for the day by going to the web dashboard. I enter my food via the app, kinda pointless if I have to then go outside that app to see the information I need. Due to a health issue I have to carefully track my sodium so I may end up ditching this app and going with another app for tracking food.

I would echo what the others have said.  There is so much more to  food tracking that Fat, Protein, Carbs + Calories.  The food db has the info - this should be low hanging fruit.  I've been so happy with the Fitbit food tracking.  It wasn't until my nutritionist gave me a sugar goal that I thought of whether the Fitbit app has it and finding it missing is a huge miss in my mind.

I have noticed that with the new Fitbit Premium app, Fitbit is emphasizing healthy eating habits via programs to reduce salt and sugar intake. I think this is a great idea, but one that is rendered almost useless by the fact that neither is actually tracked, so unless you are manually adding up amounts, you cannot really know whether you are sufficiently reducing intake. Please add a feature in the app to easily see your daily sugar and sodium intake.

I enter everything I eat in the FitBit app on my phone. It would be great if next to the carb-protein-fat circle graph there was a little bar indicating how much fiber I've eaten today. I think the recommended goal is 25g. That could be a goal line on the bar. I think that would be very helpful to a lot of people.
