Inaccurate Sleep Log? Change your settings!

Hi sleepy Community members!

Does your sleep log look something like this?

sleep log restless.png

If you think your log is inaccurate when it shows this much restlessness, you're not alone! A lot of Fitbit users have sleep logs like this, and many times it's due to the fact that Sleep settings are on "Sensitive" mode instead of "Normal" mode. A little about these two modes:

  • The normal setting counts significant movements as being awake (such as rolling over) and is appropriate for most users.
  • The sensitive setting will cause your tracker to record nearly all movements as time spent awake. This setting may be helpful for users with sleep disorders, or those who wear their tracker somewhere other than the wrist while asleep.

We strongly suggest that most users use the Normal setting. To change your settings to Normal, follow these steps, or visit our help article!

  • To change your setting in the Fitbit iOS app, go to Account Advanced Settings > Sleep Sensitivity.
  • To change your setting in the fitbit.com dashboard, go to Settings > Devices > scroll down to Sleep Tracking.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any trouble changing this setting or if you have seen a difference in the accuracy of your sleep log after switching!

Yes, I finally found where to change that setting, but it was already on
"Normal".

I had total knee replacement end of August and everything is healing
exceptionally well, except I am having so much trouble getting my sleep
back! I liked to monitor it but this I know, - is inaccurate.

It is an HR Charge 2 or 3.
Thank you for your input!!

Hi,Not sure what app you are using (on a tablet or phone or desktop) but if you sleep less than 3 hours it will not show all the info. You may have to go an extra step to get the missing data and it will not show REM etc just the amount of time asleep. Just like the device the app is haphazard and difficult to figure out how to get all the info out of. It bugs me that the app on my kindle looks different than my computer and for some reason the tablet app works much better. On another note I was at the gym and my charge 2 was showing 122 BPM while THREE different machines at the gym showed 147. That is a huge difference that could have major health implications. When this piece of junk dies I will never buy Fitbit again.

I use Inspire HR and it shows my sleep and even showed a nap! However, it seems I have to go into my computer and hit sync for it to show up on my my Inspire. I have the same problem with different screen on my computer vs. my Kindle.

  • No matter the setting, the new rating system is absolute rubbish.  Fitbit needs to make the weekly average available again.  Because any system that rates 14 hours and less than 4 hours the same is a joke.  Why would fitbit get rid of a more useful calculation for this nonsense?  Screenshot_20191019-095951_Fitbit.jpg

@bayleigh  In one sense I agree with you that the sleep tracker seems a bit off, but on the other hand it's just a watch. It can't measure all the things a sleep lab can.

It could be rating quality of the sleep, not the quantity. It could also be factoring in that sleeping 14 hours isn't exactly normal. What is your target range? 8 hours?

I'm seeing that the two periods you mention are not rated the same, though. The 3:50 has a score of 56 whereas the 14:44 session has a score of 75. The percentage of deep sleep (dark blue) is really low in the long session. So that tells me it wasn't as restorative as the length might imply. You're also getting a whole lotta REM (light blue). That's a lot on your mind. I'm tired just looking at it. Do you feel like you're dreaming all night?

I find that when my logs have more deep sleep and match the benchmarks for my age more closely I get better scores.

I hope that helps a little. Maybe?

Fitbit Charge 2 keeps getting my bedtime and wake up times very wrong. I have checked the settings as advised and the sensitivity has always been set to normal. I don’t know what more I can do but am finding this extremely frustrating and am just about ready to chuck the device!

My Versa 2 only shows sleep data from about 3 am-  4 hours later than I hit "start sleep".

Why- and what can I do.

Thanks,

I am not familiar with the Versa, I have a Charge 2 which automatically detects sleep by movement. However what I do know is they are famous for over estimating sleep time because if you lie still it assumes you are sleeping. On the other hand if you sleep with a partner or even your dog it will assume you woke up if it detects movement from them. It is a toy that gives you a very basic idea about your sleep habits. My sleep doctor considers them pretty useless for true data.

For two of the last five nights it stops my sleep tracking after 3 hours and doesn’t pick back up.  I’m not restless.  I’m asleep.  Any idea why?  I love my Charge 3 but this is my third unit since February 2019 due to an array of technical issues.  Thanks!

I don’t like the versa lite.  It does not track my sleep correctly no matter what setting it is on. I go to sleep at 10 and it logs my sleep from 2-3 AM. I upgraded from the Flex and wished I didn’t. All you had to do when you went to bed was tap the Flex. I was logging a normal 7-8 hour sleep , showing awake at first and a little restless during the night. Is there a way to get the Versa Lite to start when you go to bed?  I got this a month ago and I’m thinking of returning it.

If you want to track your sleep accurately you need a totally different type of machine. The Fitbits only track movement and lots of things can effect that such as sleeping with a partner and even just being still but not asleep. If you have a health worry about your sleep and have insurance it's totally worth it to go to a sleep lab. Spend a night hooked up to an array of wires and fig out how you really sleep. The problem for me with that is sleeping with an ECG, TWO breath analyzers taped under my nose and a whole bunch of other wires hooked up to your head. Still, that is the gold standard. Or try this.
) EverSleep 5-in-1 Sleep Tracker

This 5-in-1 sleep device claims to be more accurate than many sleep trackers. It is a little different from the other “wearables” on this list because it doesn’t track 24/7 health data; you only wear this device at bedtime.

This device attaches at the wrist and has a pulse oximeter that remains attached to the end of the finger throughout the night. Although this may be uncomfortable for some people, it promises a more accurate measure of respiration and heart-rate throughout the night. Although this device is NOT FDA regulated, it could potentially detect the first signs of sleep apnea.

Choose this device if you want a highly accurate sleep tracker, and you’re not likely to be bothered by a finger attachment.

Sleep Tracking Features

- Sleep monitoring (tracks duration and awakenings)
- Sleep cycle analysis
- Detects snoring/teeth grinding
- Measures blood oxygen (using a pulse oximeter)
- Personalized sleep coaching

How Does the EverSleep 5-in-1 tracker Measure Sleep?

This device measures respiration, snoring, heart rate, movement and blood oxygen. As with many of the other devices on this list, Eversleep uses PPG to measure heart-rate. However, they also use a pulse oximeter (attached to the finger) to obtain a measure of the body’s oxygen content. A low oxygen reading at certain stages during the night could indicate a sleep disorder.

Also, this tracker features a 3-axis accelerometer to measure micro-motions in your arms as you sleep. It also has a recorder to detect snoring and teeth grinding.

What Does the Output Data Look Like?

To track your data, you’ll need to connect the device to your smartphone (It supports both Android and IOS).

The output app provides detailed graphs for pulse rate, movements, oxygen level, and sleep quality. Depending on your sleep data, this app provides personalized sleep coaching. Also, this app can help you track your recovery cycles from sports training.

Pros

Although some wristbands use PPG to measure heart-rate, this device uses a finger-tip pulse oximeter to measure blood oxygen. This is likely to give a more accurate reading of heart activity.

Cons

This sleep tracker is not as comfortable as other wearables.

My guess is your still laying in bed after you wake up for a long period of time with your eyes closed , quite still.

No I’m in bed at 10 and it only starts logging at 2AM! I’m not awake or restless for 4 hours. At least you just hit the Flex to go into sleep mode.
