So I just got a new phone and I downloaded the Fitbit app. When I tried to setup my existing Fitbit to the new phone it errors out indicating this account is already in use (as it is set up on my old phone)
how do I get past this to get my Fitbit acct and sync my existing Fitbit on my new phone?

It sounds as if you are trying to set up a new fitbit account on your new phone. There's no need to do this. Instead you can just sign on to your existing fitbit account and this means you'll keep all your data, settings, badges etc.
Also, have you checked that your new phone is supported by fitbit at www.fitbit.com/devices ?
