@tammygeiss this thread relates to an old problem with the android app. I think you are being affected by a new bug that's affecting the iOS app. Fitbit are aware of it and are working on a fix. Keep an eye on the following thread where they are posting updates:

Yes - top right of opening page - looks like envelope - click that, then the notifications tab at top right.
This should remove the number on the Fitbit icon.
Hope it works for you

The number 18 sits at the top right corner of the Fitbit icon on my iPhone. I've looked at the app on the phone and also online and can't seem to find the problem or how to remove the number.  This is a relatively new development ...within the last 2 weeks or so.  Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

There is a red 100 (number) on my Fitbit icon on my phone screen. Does anyone know what this is? It’s been there for about 2 weeks now. I’ve had Fitbit for almost 4 years and have never seen it before. I checked notifications thinking I had that many notifications and cleared that out, rebooted, but it’s still there.
Is there a way to upload a picture?

Why is number of 32 appearing on my app on my IPhone.  There are no notifications in the app.

Folks I was helped through Fitbit Chat to remove the number.  What worked was to log out of the app, power my phone off and back on again.   What didn't work was deleting the app and reinstalling.
