In this case, please try to forceclose the app by double tapping the home button and swiping up the app. Open it again and check if it's possible to add the swim lenght this time. If not, please logout from the app, restart your mobile device and log back it.
Give it a shot and let me know the outcome!

I finally gave up and returned my Flex 2 - even though I uninstalled/re-installed the app numerous times, every time I tapped swimming it went back to the iPhone screen. FRUSTRATING!!

Hello there @Shell1969 and @Garyad!, thank you for keeping me updated, I'm very glad the issue was resolved after uninstalling and reinstalling the Fitbit app. @Ashager, have you tried reinstalling the app lately to check if it works like it did for @Shell1969 and @Garyad? That would be very helpful.
