Alta Notifications

Alta comes with the ability to set up and receive call, text, and calendar notifications on iOS and Android.

This post will provide instructions on how to setup your alerts so that you can see who's texting you, the Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 11.29.29 AM.pngcontent of the messages, who's calling, and what your calendar has on deck for you. For a detailed overview of alerts for Alta, please see this help page

  • How do I set up call/text/calendar notifications on Alta?
  1. Make sure that your mobile device is compatible with our notifications feature by visiting http://www.fitbit.com/devices
  2. On your mobile device, make sure Bluetooth is enabled, and make sure your device is nearby!
  3. Open the Fitbit app on your mobile device and tap your tracker tile at the top of your mobile Dashboard.
  4. Tap your tracker tile a second time, tap "Notifications" (iOS) or "Call and Text Notifications (Android) and then turn on call/text/calendar notifications.
  5. To verify that set up was successful, check out the list of Bluetooth connected devices on your mobile device. Your Alta should appear.
  • How do I view call/text/calendar notifications on Alta?

You can view your notifications when they come in by using Quick View or by double-tapping the Alta where the band and tracker meet.

Notes

  • For Android users, please ensure that you've turned notification access on in your settings and enabled each notification in the Fitbit App.
  • Calendar notifications use the native calendar app in iOS, and the native or selected 3rd party app on Android.
  • Windows Phones do not support alerts at this time.

Hello,

my wife just bought a new phone, a bq Aquaris X Pro with Android 8.1.0. It's not among the list of supported devices (which is very short, indeed...), but it should have all the necessary requirements. In particular it supports Bluetooth 4.2.

Before using this phone she was using a Windows 10 phone (Nokia Lumia 735) with her Alta.

Now, she paired her Alta with the new phone correctly, using the Fitbit app. Synching works perfectly and reliably, however notifications do not work.

I already ensured that:

  • the access to notifications is granted to the Fitbit app
  • do not disturb is disabled
  • notifications pop up in the phone, it's just the tracker that does not vibrate
  • neither text notifications nor call notifications work (I haven't tried calendar notifications yet)
  • when, from the notification settings of the Fitbit app, I click on the three dots and choose to send a test call notification, nothing happens
  • I already tried to remove the Alta from the account and add it again
  • I already tried to restart the Alta using its charging cable and pressing the cable button 3 times

What I see is that the Alta device is NOT shown among the list of known Bluetooth devices by this new phone. This is in contrast with what happened on the old Windows 10 phone and with what happens with my own Charge 2 on another Android phone (a bq Aquaris M5, which however runs Android 7.1.2 and supports just Bluetooth 4.1), where, once paired using the Fitbit app, the device also gets paired on the standard Android Bluetooth settings page and becomes a "known" device. On my wife's phone this does not happen, Alta is simply not shown as a known device and if I try to scan for new devices, then it shows up, but pairing fails with "wrong passkey or PIN message". I read in the forums that this is normal, that I shouldn't try to pair from there, but I was wondering if it's OK that it's not shown at all as a known device and if this can be the reason why I don't get notifications working. If so, how can I fix this?

Or maybe this is the normal behaviour when using a Bluetooth 4.2 compatible phone?

Thanks in advance,

Mauro

Hey there everyone! Good to see you in the Fitbit Community Forums! 🙂

I'd like to help you guys out with this.

@rgoodie @krissy101, by any chance, are you using an iPhone? If so, there were some issues when uses upgraded to iOS 12, so my recommendation would be to make sure that the Fitbit app is up to date and also that you have already turned the Bluetooth off and back on. See if that makes any difference.

@mauromol, I do think that she might be having issues with the notifications because of the incompatibility between that phone and Fitbit. When it comes to devices compatibility, if a specific phone is not on the list of compatible devices, you might be able to sync with it but we don't guarantee that the functionality will be optimum as we are still testing on these phone models and due to the large number of Android and Windows devices, our team has not yet tested all of them.

If you guys need more help, let me know! 🙂

I still haven't had this resolved. Using a Samsung 8, did all of the steps Fitbit said to do, still either not getting notifications or receiving them way later. Yesterday, I got a notification that I was getting a phone call 10 minutes after I'd completed the call...

Yep, I had the same problem with my iPhone 6, with the exception that I never received the notification. Fitbit ultimately replaced my Alta for free.

Thanks for getting back guys!

@niki_johnson8, I'm sorry about that. Did you try my suggestion of removing your tracker from the connected Bluetooth devices on your phone? If not, go to the Bluetooth settings on your phone. On your connected devices, look for your tracker. Tap on it, then choose the option that says "Forget this device". Then, proceed to set up your tracker as a new device.

For this, go to the Account section at the top right corner on the Fitbit app and select the option that says "Set up a new device". Follow the on-screen instructions and once you're done, your tracker should be syncing without a problem and notifications should work.

@Placerville20, I'm happy to hear that our Support Team was able to get your tracker replaced! Anything else you may need, I'm here to help!

Good to see you all in the Forums! 🙂

@finsup1017, as @CindyLouWho22 suggested, you just need to click on the Unsusbscribe option and you shoud stop getting notifications from this thread. Thanks for the help @CindyLouWho22!

@niki_johnson8 thanks a lot for  trying all of that. I'm not really sure what could be causing this to happen at this point. My last recommendation would be to make sure that you're on the latest version of the OS for your phone as well as on the latest version of the Fitbit app.

If you continue to have these problems, I can  recommend trying to remove your tracker from the connected Bluetooth devices and set it up on the iPhone again to see if it's an issue with the phone itself or if it could be the tracker.

I'll be looking forward for your reply.

Both my phone and my Fitbit are up to date. I've already tried removing the tracker and re-connecting it via bluetooth. I'm using a Samsung 8, not an iPhone...

It will tell me "1 message" but doesn't tell me who it's from or what the message says. I am using Galaxy S8+ with a fitbit alta.

Thanks for getting back @niki_johnson8 and my apologies for the confusion. I'm really out of things to try in this situation. Not sure what could be causing this. Do you have any other device that you can sync your tracker to and set up notifications there just to see if it works on another device?

@Juanita5657, I'm sorry about this. If you're seeing that it only says that you have one message, you might want to check that on your Messages settings, you have the option enabled to be able to see message previews. If this option is not enabled, you will only be able to see that you have one message  but will not be able to tell who the message is from or what it says.

If you guys need more help, I'll be looking forward for your replies!

This is also happening to me. I don’t see a reply on this one or fix?

I don’t believe Fitbit ever acknowledged this as an issue or that anyone had a fix. My Alta continues to provide notifications intermittently. No rhyme or reason as to when it works.
