I appreciate all your reports and your screenshots showing the consumption of data. So far this issue is under investigation and probably you will continue seeing this behavior, nonetheless I really appreciate all your patience until we get this issue fixed.
@SilverStick regarding your concerns, if this issue is going to be resolved with version 2.74. I'm afraid not, since this issue was just recently reported. As @Rauser mentioned here, the issue still continue with the new version.
Speaking of the new version, I know some of you have deleted the app to avoid this issue, so take this as information only, and for those who are using the app, the new version of the Fitbit app has started to roll out; which contain stability improvements and security patches along other bug fixes. This version is being gradually released, scheduled to be available for all our Android users as the days goes by. If you are not able to see this update, try to review your Google Play store at a later time. For more details you can review this post.
For those who have removed the app, in the meantime remember that you can use your computers to sync your watches. More details in the following article: How do Fitbit devices sync their data?
So far that's all the news I got, when I got more details I will let you know.

A workaround for all who don't want to uninstall the app:
Get "Datally" from the appstore. With this Google app you'll be able to block the mobile data use while an app is in the Background.

I'm using an LG V20 with OS version 7.0 and Fitbit app version 2.73, and experiencing this problem.
I logged out of the fitbit app to see if that would help, figuring that would be the easiest way to get an update when available without having to check constantly. This did NOT help - it kept using data at a ridiculous rate without being logged in.

Massive issues for me as well - keeps overloading CPU, keep killing it in the background, but it's draining my battery massively . Data usage is usually less than 100mb for a month, already up to 523mb for just over half a month!!

I can also attest to experiencing heavy use of mobile data by the Fitbit App. So far this month, Fitbit has used up 562 Mb of mobile data out of my 2 Gb monthly data limit. Obviously this cannot continue until my data allowance resets at the end of the month, otherwise I will incur costs for any additional data used.
In addition to the Fibtit App gobbling up my mobile data there has been a corresponding huge increase in the battery power the Fitbit App is consuming on my mobile phone. Already today the Fitbit App has used up 61% of my phone's battery leaving me just 19% remaining.
It would seem a reasonable assumption at this stage to assume that the two issues are somehow connected.
I have had my Ionic for less than two weeks and...now this...on top of issues with my Ionic's battery lasting less than 2 days (despite power saving) and inconsistent and under-recording of my Active Minutes.

Experiencing the same issue.

Battery lost 60% in 3 hours, I've had to uninstall the app to have a functioning phone again, until the fix I suppose I will have to periodically install the app and sync my versa to get my stats...

Glad that I'm not the only one! Thought that my phone was dying.
Phone - Galaxy S8+
Android 8.0
Latest app as of today
I've had over 200mb of background data usage today alone, even though I'd disabled the background data usage. Along with 61% of my battery being used by the app alone.

For me, the more concerning issue is the drain on mobile data. It's consuming approximately 6mb per 15min!
Please fix it soon!
