Jaunty July Step Challenge

ANSWERED

The Jumping June step challenge is nearly over so it’s time to sign up for July.  Jaunty July?  Yeah, well, it is super hot in the Northern hemisphere, and super cold in the Southern hemisphere, so it is best just to have a little attitude about your steps and get at it.  🙂

How It Works:

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

16 weight-lifting days

2/14

My first Jaunty Walk involved walking around the gym this morning between sets slowly flapping my arms holding 5 lbs weights.  I probably shouldn't really count it since that kind of silliness is almost normal in a gym.  While I was doing my Jaunty Walk, a woman was doing walking lunges while extending out her right hand and then touching her nose each stride.  I decided against copying her as I didn't want to hit myself in the face with a 5 lb weight!

@Ennay- oddly your comment about NEAT is pretty much me at times.  I do make a point to do more little movements during the day, but I'm not always so good at it.  Usually when I'm at work I'm way more likely to get up and move.

@Baltoscott

People in gyms do lots of jaunty things, like running on treadmills like a mouse in a cage and lifting weights that are quite happy where they are. Meanwhile, the clutter at home stays where it is.

@WendyB,

Glad to see you back and exercising a bit.

For those who are trying to get 2018 miles in 2018, today starts the second half of the year. Well, I guess it started the second half of yesterday.

OK, I'm in Jaunty July, in addition to my step/floor/mile goals, I will do my best to check in twice a week.

Shooting for an average step count of 14 k, 7 miles, 30 floors per day.  Same as last month.

How June turned out for me,

26 of 30 for steps, averaged 17.5 k per day, best day 28.1 k.  Worst day 5.6 k which was our 33 anniversary, we drove down to Crystal Bridges Art Museum in Bentonville, Ar. Had a great time!

Miles, 26 of 30, average 8.16 per day, best day 12.88,  worst, 2.53

Floors, 21 of 30, but averaged 48 per day, best day 127.

picture is from museum grounds, building is part of 5 museum buildings built over a small lake, beautiful grounds!

@benvegi -- you and the Mrs. are looking quite happy on your 33rd.  With good reason, I think (I just took a peak at the Crystal Bridges Museum website).  Definitely looks worth a visit.

That is generally true for me too -- More NEAT when I'm working in DC vs. at home in Baltimore, or when I'm not working at all.  OTOH, I tend to have more scheduled and longer planned physical activities on days I don't work, so total daily activity may not be that much different.

Noticing also that in the heat, my NEAT goes WAY down.  Actual temperature is in the high 90s all week, and triple digit heat index.  Continued warnings on the radio to stay in AC if possible.

It is worth a visit! They had a special Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition (until
9/21) which was excellent. Of course they have plenty of other art, both
inside and out. Not to mention lots of walking trails. It is about 3 hours
from our home but we manage a visit once or twice a year. Let me know it
you do visit perhaps we can join you there.

July 3

8,000 steps 12 days -- 1/12

15,000 steps 10 days -- 1/10

35 Jumping Jacks 22 days -- 2/22

Floor Exercises w/weights 12 days -- 2/12

So far I like the alternating pace, one day 15,000 steps and the next (at least) 8,000. I sense a calmness settling in, dissipating stress. The older I get, the more my body reacts negatively to stress.

I see my GP tomorrow about those extreme pains I had last week (and other times) when walking, and to get a prescription for inserts in my shoes (Health insurance will pay for them every 3 years, and they’re expensive over here).

BTW, often a lot of my steps (if not all on some days) are NEAT. But I do go on my treadmill @5x a week and more and more am enjoying doing that = time to myself. A routine. I know, I’m weird. Oh well. 😇

@SeleneD.  Another nice doggie pic.  Such an expressive face!

To get Versa to sync try restarting it and restarting whatever you are trying to sync with.  If you synced with more than one device in the past (a phone and and iPad for example) make sure only one is in Bluetooth range. (Better to just turn off Bluetooth on the second device).

Hope you get it working.

@SeleneDMy fitbit will only sync sporadically.  Even though I have it set to always sync it will usually only sync once, maybe twice a day and 3-4 times a month it gets stuck.  I can never force it no matter what I do.  Usually it fixes itself sometime in the night.

Ugh.  very lazy today

I jauntily waved a paintbrush while painting my deck. Then I jauntily walked in the front yard while pushing my lawnmower. Today, I plan to jauntily swish a rag while washing my car the old-fashioned way. I noticed that lately, I'm walking more than I drive.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I set a goal to walk 100,000 miles by 6/5/53, my hundredth birthday. Right now, it's looking like I'll need to live a few extra years. I have many goals in the background to create the best chance of happening. @Baltoscott, you are going to need to hang around to keep this topic going.

@Jotex, good luck with resolving your pains. I find if I keep my steps low enough to minimize pains, they go away. A new one appears when I increase my steps. Usually, they are minor. One thing I've done to minimize stress is to avoid all discussions about food.

For those going through periods of low-motivation, I've looked back and have seen that the number of steps I get a week fluctuates like the stock market. I'm learning to enjoy both the ups and downs. I used to hide my profile during really bad months, but now, I think it's useful for others to see that everyone has ups and downs.

4 July

Happy 4th of July to all (if you wish people happy 4th lol)

10,000 steps a day for 20 days                       2/20

Swim 2x per week                                              1/8

Dance 6 hours a week                                      2.5/6     2.5/24

One Coach workout or bike ride per week     1/4

4 Jaunty walks over the month                       4/4

My Jaunty walk consisted of me walking to a fabric store and buying 2m of soft boning and wearing it around my neck as I hiked back. Im sure it looked silly but it was easier than carrying it in my hand!

@GershonSurge  Are you a '53 baby? So am I. About a month younger than you!😊
