The Jumping June step challenge is nearly over so it’s time to sign up for July. Jaunty July? Yeah, well, it is super hot in the Northern hemisphere, and super cold in the Southern hemisphere, so it is best just to have a little attitude about your steps and get at it. 🙂
How It Works:
The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.
Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”
Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.
Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total
Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week
Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Maybe prune it way back next (now or in the fall) and see what happens. @GershonSurge -- I know that song, too! Thanks -- brought back nice memories. It is more of a periwinkel blue (blue purple) color you could say. 😇

I was doing okay today until I sliced into the tip of my first finger on my dominant hand. It really didn't bug me until now when I'm typing. I may leave any gardening until Saturday to see if I can get it to heal up. I can always bandage it, but I'd rather see if it will start to heal on it's own. @Jotex - I will take a good look at the plants probably next week. I have a few things that need planting and they'll take priority first. Some of it looks okay, some of it just looks dead.
Anyways, as of July 23rd I'm back to work. After a phone discussion today (where we worked out the terms) I got an offer letter that I signed and returned. I'm so looking forward to it. Although I didn't accomplish as much when I was off, I'm excited about the new challenge. I have been a manager before, but in a much smaller company, and in production (not quality, which is my first love).
I will have to stop the late nights in the coming week, and getting up at a decent hour. I got up around 6 this morning to get the garbage out. I'm going to try and set a 'no later than 8am' for the next week. If I'm not careful I will go back to very poor sleeping habits.

Tomorrow, I'll turn the tens and units box white again and start over. What I'll get in return is shading the 300 mile box. It seems like a bit of a disappointment. Oh well, the data will be in the spreadsheet and the chart.
Congratulations on getting a new job. Bummer about your finger. Hope it heals quickly.

Hi all, sorry I have been MIA. Combo of depression and crazy busy at work.
A bit behind on all my goals so I have recalculated for the remainder of the month what i need to do to hit my original goals.
Been looking more at why my burn suddenly dropped. A bit is the depression, but I think some of it is the last couple weeks I havent been able to walk with my walking partner. I think I go slower and go later in the day by myself and that is making enough of a difference both in what is burned through exercise and the afterburn.
Since I last posted I had 2 very low days - maybe 5-6K steps and then a 16K day and a 13.5K day, none of which hit my burn target. Very hot here, got an hour in this morning and will try for some later.

Shooting for an average step count of 14 k, 7 miles, 30 floors per day, plus check in twice a week.
7/8 steps 18.7 k, 41 floors, 8.5 miles
7/9 steps 16.3 k, 41 floors, 7.4 miles
7/10 steps 14.1 k, 41 floors, 6.5 miles
7/11 steps 14.4 k, 3 floors, 6.8 miles
7/12 steps 9 k, 14 floors, 4 miles
Let me explain a bit here, on 7/10 I got my morning walk in, but then had to drive to Springfield. My wife had scheduled cataract surgery for 7/11 which got scheduled for 6:00 AM, much easier on us to make the hour and a half drive up the day before. Surgery went quickly and well, she was up and about in less than an hour. Had a follow up appt scheduled for 7/12 at 8:45 am so we stayed over another night. Was able to get a walk of 1 mile in on two of those days.
Don't know how those of you who live in a city put up with the traffic! Not a lot of pedestrian or bike paths and hearing cars roaring up behind me on my walks was disconcerting at the least. It's a rare day when I see more than two cars on my walks at home.
Home safe now and my wife is enjoying her much improved eyesight!

I made a subtle change to the table by splitting the units box into two groups of five miles. I should be able to complete a five-mile grouping almost every day. I've been reading up on some psychology and have learned that we feel happy (or have self-esteem) when we can see we are making steady progress towards our long term goals. Each time we recognize this, we get a little burst of serotonin that puts us in a happy mood. Dopamine is released when we have peak experiences. By dividing the units into two groups of five miles, I should be able to get a shot of serotonin every day. I'm not sure when the dopamine will come. Probably each 500 miles for the first few thousand miles. Maybe then it will be each 1,000 miles. Perhaps, it will randomly come on exceptionally good days.
Congratulations on adding a couple extra minutes.
I'm glad your wife's surgery went well. Smaller cities usually have a quiet route for walking or running a block or two back from the main streets.
You had quite a bad experience with the vandalism at the theater. Still, you handled it and are hopefully bouncing back. It likely affected other things in your life, too. About your calorie burn; I've learned that if something can fluctuate, it usually will, and it's often hard to figure out the reasons. The body naturally likes to conserve energy, so it performs activities more efficiently.
It looks like you are quietly reaching your goals. Good job!

@GershonSurge no the vandalism isn't causing any kind of continuing stress. That was just an annoyance mostly because of the bad timing, but once the window was cleaned up and the work was done, that one was gone. Depression doesn't work that way, it comes and goes on its own with no real cause. Although I have other work stress that might be contributing.
@Jotex usually by the time I can post about it I am through the worst of it.
Ugh too much protein yesterday - nausea. Trying to get up the oomph to go walk before it gets hot.
21K steps yesterday 3K burn.

Nice Saturday. We have been doing organized bike rides lately, so Jane signed up me, her and our friend Mike for one today. It was a bike/walking tour of the Pigtown Hollins Market area of Baltimore. It is kind of fun to play tourist in your own back yard every once and a while.
Wasn't quite the bike ride I expected though. A woman who runs a singles group organized the event. About 10 people not counting the two guides we had. We didn't know it was singles focused before we went, but it seems like there are a lot of regulars and they were all very welcoming, and there were two other couples there as well. We got breakfast and lunch and special before opening hours tours of the B&O Railroad Museum and the Mount Clair Mansion. The "ride" was only about 5 miles total, but plenty of steps and I got my bike miles over 20 by riding there from home.
