The Jumping June step challenge is nearly over so it’s time to sign up for July. Jaunty July? Yeah, well, it is super hot in the Northern hemisphere, and super cold in the Southern hemisphere, so it is best just to have a little attitude about your steps and get at it. 🙂
How It Works:
The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.
Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”
Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.
Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total
Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week
Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@A_Lurker wrote:I certainly didn't match my goals in June, but lets set them for July:
1) 11,000 steps each day
2) daily push ups (1 or more)
3) 7h sleep average each week
4) decluttering/cleaning/yardwork each day
5) checking in each day
1) 6/31
2) 6/31
3) week 1 so far (6h10m)
4) 6/31
5) 5/31
Unless I don't get out of bed until noon (and sleep) I won't get my 7h this week. Oh well, there's next week. I'll be having yet another onsite interview with the semi-local company. This time it's with the owner so I'm assuming that there will be some sort of decision coming next week. I feel like I'm in holding a bit but I really shouldn't be. Anyway, will be starting my wine (rhubarb with some strawberry top up when I strain the fruit out) tomorrow. I have some things in the fridge to get put into the freezer - you freeze the rhubarb for at least 24h to help with juice extraction.
Chopped up the various lettuces, kale, kohlrabi and swiss chard from my local farm share into one container. Then I made a pasta salad (4 peppers, red onion, cucumber, black olives, salad dressing, parmesan cheese and pasta). It's supposed to have tomatoes in as well but I wasn't sure that they would keep as well. So, this was lunch today (and for the next number of days) and possibly dinner with some extra protein. Should have had it ready last week when it was so hot, but doesn't really matter.

We don’t know the year we will leave this earth. But, if you mentally project yourself running until the century mark, and make the right adjustments, you’ll expect and achieve more vitality during every decade of your life.

I need to increase my average to 7.82 miles/day to finish by 6/5/53, but if I can't, I guess I won't mind living an extra few years.
Many people give up on setting personal records when they age. It's not necessary. Just increase the distance and measure in days instead of hundredths of a second. Speed has a limit, but nobody has found an endurance limit yet. Along the way, I'll be tracking personal bests for 500 miles, 1,000 miles and 10,000 miles. I need to get my time for 500 miles just under 63 days. That's an average of 7.82 miles a day.
Your salad looks delicious.
Congratulations on adding another minute.
I'm starting to enjoy the 90's. Hope you had fun at the theme park.
Hope that shot is still working out for you, and you can gradually increase your steps.
That little theme park sounds fun. It sounds like a great place to create memories for the kids.
Are you getting all those floors walking up hills?

@A_Lurker that salad looks awesome
@GershonSurge-hmm, I should take my miles from running and figure out where I am. Although I get a lot more incidental miles this way.
Pretty good day at the park. Didn;t get the burn/step ratio I was expecting. I think my HR is lower overall so not burning as much standing around. Kids had a good day.

Just me and the dogs (and cat) today and tomorrow. Jane got talked into training for a mini-triathlon and tomorrow is the big race day in Philly. She and the group of women she's been training with did a practice version last weekend so she knows she can do it, but she still can't quite believe she is doing it. Very excited. 🙂

@benvegi - Wow! I don't think I've ever come across a bobcat. How cool. Not sure if we have them in Maryland. We are supposed to have bear, but I've never seen one of those. Plenty of fox, and some coyote.

@benvegi- coyotes are quite common in southwestern Ontario. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter in the last city I lived in. One night one of the dog walkers saw a couple of dogs hanging around in the dark when she was locking up. It wasn't unusual to have animals dumped at the door (although this wasn't the policy). She grabbed collars, leads, treats and started trying to get them to come closer. They moved off and she followed until they passed under a street lamp - and she realized she was trying to put a collar on a couple of coyotes. I never saw any, but they were quite common on the bike/walking path that passed through the city.
Where I am now there are a lot of deer, some coyotes and some unconfirmed cougar sightings every now and then. There were a couple of cows brought down by them (with evidence) but they have never been identified.
I had never seen a deer (alive that is) until this fall when commuting. I came past a snow plow and saw a number bounding across the highway. Really, really close.

Very poor sleep last night, so going in a few minutes. I got sidetracked this afternoon going to pick up some rhubarb juice. I want to add it into my wine when I siphon it into the carboy. I was going to bring it to a boil and put it into canning jars. Unfortunately it was frozen so it's defrosting in my kitchen at the moment. There's still a significant ice/juice block in it so it will be fine until the morning.
The salad is good, and it keeps well for a number of days. Although I like the idea of making something different every day it works quite well keeping the separate components (lettuce, pasta salad, tomatoes) for a quick easy salad.

@Baltoscott I'm sure Jane will do fine. Keep us posted. Excited for her!
I see fox and coyotes all the time where I walk. Coyotes bark and run never have bothered me. Worry about people with dogs tho.

I want you to take control of your running enjoyment and fatigue while staying injury free.
Galloway, Jeff. Running Until You're 100 3rd Ed (p. 2). Cardinal Publishers Group. Kindle Edition.
I decided to increase my daily mileage to get on a timeline to finish by 6/5/53. This means my jogs will be longer and slower. I'll need to be careful not to injure myself.

Hope your wife enjoys the triathlon today. That Rocky picture is awesome.
Sometime, try heating your salad in the microwave for 30 seconds. It brings out the flavors without any significant cooking. The same thing works for fruit in oatmeal.
Good job getting your boxing done at the end of the day.
Incidental steps may be more important than walking/running steps. If you decide to start a 100 year challenge, you can pick whatever mileage you like and adjust it along the way instead of letting the completion date vary. Living to 100 is the easy part.

14744, 2548 burn
@GershonSurgeoh for sure incidental is more important. Way too much sedentary time lately. I may have to go back to chasing the blue dots. Best days are usually baseball tournaments where I get few steps but lots of cheering. BUT baseball is over. Oregon is weird that baseball ends just as the dry season starts and then starts again just as the rainy season starts. I've been lazy lately.
We get bobcats around here but also occasionally cougar. My friend had a big one hanging around her cherry trees for a few days. Lots of coyote and fox. Elk. Deer are pretty common but I don't see them all that often, not like when we lived in Austin and they traveled in large flocks. Yes I know herd is the proper term, but these are the tiniest deer - maybe 3 ft at the shoulder - and they were totally unafraid of people and would congregate on the lawn in front of one of the big housing developments - they always reminded me of flocks of pigeons that would barely move to avoid people but be back in their spot before you were barely past.
