Jaunty July Step Challenge

ANSWERED

The Jumping June step challenge is nearly over so it’s time to sign up for July.  Jaunty July?  Yeah, well, it is super hot in the Northern hemisphere, and super cold in the Southern hemisphere, so it is best just to have a little attitude about your steps and get at it.  🙂

How It Works:

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I had a long discussion with my internal coach yesterday. I wanted to increase my miles by jogging more, but he reminded me the root of this challenge is getting incidental steps while mostly working. The measure of success is really burning calories instead of burning up miles. He said I could increase my calories burned each day to a little over 3200, or about a 100 more than the 3130 I averaged in June.

So, instead of jogging in the evening, I spent 68 minutes painting one of the garage doors. I'd painted the floor of the porch in the morning. I decided I don't need to paint the whole house this year. I'll just touch up some spots.

Deep thought for the day: The reward for working is being able to do more work.

@GershonSurge  Yes, get those floors walking the hills here in S. Missouri. We live down in the valley by the creek, either way I go on the road it's uphill, then down, then up. I get about 32 floors going up to the west within a mile, go north get about 20 floors. Some days I go both ways. Even walking from my barn to the house gains me 2 floors, it's 200' from the house. Even gain floors weed eating!

Here's a picture, just doesn't do the rolling hill justice.  First picture is from top of hill to the north, the arrow points to the top of hill to my west.  In picture 2 is looking back to picture 1 the white dot is a home next to where I took 1st picture.

@benvegi,

Pictures make hills look 10 degrees lower in slope and butts look 10 pounds heavier.

I can appreciate the Missouri hills. In 1983, I rode in the Race Across Missouri bicycle race. It started at the amusement park that used to be along I-70. There was flooding that year, so the first 15 miles or so was through about a foot of water. Then we got on the lettered roads that went straight up and straight down. I had no idea before the race it would be so steep, so I used my racing rear cluster.

I made it 165 miles the first day, and then it got dark. I couldn't see well at night at the time, so I elected to drop out. I still regret that decision.

I wish they would make half-mile tracks with the first third of it up a hill with a six degree slope and the last two-thirds down a gentle two-degree slope.

@GershonSurge Very impressive! A very wet year with flooding everywhere. So you found out what our hills are like, hard enough to walk at times. A bike would be tougher especially on our rougher lettered roads. Esp at night.

My wife rode in Ragbrai  (The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) for several years so I have some idea how tough biking like that is. Her best day was 100 miles.

15193, 2704 burn

Hmmm, the last week of June I was thinking 2700 was a wimpy challenge because I was easily going over the burn, not so much now.  I did everything I could yesterday to get passive burn and woomph.
Goal update
AVerage -13500 Steps  - 113168 MTD (14146)

Average 2700 burn - 21225 mtd (2653)

Sadly insomnia interfered with getting up early enough for a walk before work or a walk to work.  May have a 16 hour work day today, hard to say.

@GershonSurgehah! That track would be fantastic.  Although it still would be a track.  I used to have a neighborhood that worked about like that.

@WendyB, Ok, I will though that one may be a while. I finished turning it today and then put it in a paper bag to dry. That may take up to two months, then it will be sanded and finished.
