Fitbit Update: 8/14

Hey all!

Today we have completely released (out to 100%) this new Charge 2 firmware (22.58.0) to all users. This means everyone should now see it available for download in the Fitbit app. Please update to this new firmware. For instructions on how to complete the update, read How do I update my Fitbit device?

If you come across any difficulty updating, read Why can't I update my Fitbit device?

We've included bug fixes and improvements in this new firmware and always recommend having your tracker up to date, including the Fitbit app on the latest app version.

Fitbit Update: 7/24

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to announce a new firmware update for Charge 2 (version: 22.58.0).

We've begun releasing this new firmware to customers. This is a progressive rollout which means everyone will receive it at different stages until it has been completely released to all users. We roll out releases in phases as a cautionary measure so that we can monitor performance closely and make adjustments if needed.

*Firmware releases are not distributed based on region or location and can reach anyone no matter where you reside. We do not recommend performing a factory reset to force the update to your device as your data will be lost and you may not get the update. Please be patient and wait until you see the update banner inside of the Fitbit app to begin the firmware download.

WHAT’S NEW AND FIXED

This release includes other bug fixes and improvements.

HOW DO I UPDATE?

Step by step instructions for updating your Charge 2 can be found here.

If you run into any trouble updating your Charge 2, I recommend reviewing these troubleshooting tips

Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback on the latest release. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!

I’ve restarted it. And I believe the hr lights are still blinking. Hard to tell since the screen is giving no information due to the pixel lines not working properly

I have been following this thread since I posted. My wife has a Charge 2, I have a Charge 3. Both have recently undergone firmware updates - and we had problems getting the updates to take. However, we did get the updates to take and apparently successfully.

The one thing that all these complaints seem to  have  in common is they were all attempted on a smartphone. The same with us - until we did the update by signing into our accounts on the computer. Once we tried through the computer, the updates went very quickly and smoothly. We have seen no problems since we updated.

My hypothesis is that the reliability of the various cellular networks is not really "clean" enough to transfer the data packets correctly. Checksums don't add up, data bits are missed, and other various glitches manifest themselves when using the cellular network to transmit and check data packets.  I wonder if users who use a computer based update vice using their smartphones might have fewer issues.

My update worked fine for a couple of days, and now seems to be completely broken. All of my stats are gone, it will not show step count on the app, nor can I even pull up sleep or heart rate data. It says it’s completely synced, but will only show today’s calorie count.

I have exactly the same issue. The app didn't sync (even though it says it just synced) and doesn't show any data from the tracker. I have iPhone 6s and Charge 2. Will this be resolved soon?

Folks; given the multitude of Charge 2 owner reporting problems with this firmware update I would strongly suggest that you do NOT download it.  It shows up on my app every day that there's an update but I just ignore it.  My Charge 2 continues to work just fine without it.  Based on my experience with the Ionic and past flawed firmware/software updates given time Fitbit sorts this out and your device can be recovered.  The way ahead is to NEVER download any new updates without first logging onto the Fitbit community and checking to see if others are having issues and then proceed accordingly.  Good luck all.

I see my results from my Charge 2 on my ipad - I don’t have a smart phone. I wouldn’t know how to download a change.

Since I’ve updated, my hart rate monitor hasn’t worked, my screen flickers occasionally, and my battery is draining faster than before. Has anyone else experienced these or similar problems?

Well. I wish I'd seen this thread a week ago before I updated my Charge 2. I received my stats through email this morning and saw that my tracker hadn't submitted anything since 5th August. No big deal. Occasionally that happens so I usually just catch it up. If only it had been that simple this time.

I attempted a sync on my smartphone to no avail.... it wouldn't even detect my tracker. So I tried syncing to my iPod (which had previously worked fine) .... same story. I then followed all the troubleshooting steps for not syncing .... right down to removing the device (despite it being the only device on both devices) and trying to link it again. Now neither device will detect it to add it back to the app.

So I came home, installed the Connect app on my laptop - it won't detect my tracker either. Last ditch attempt by installing on my iPad .... you can guess the rest... I now have a tracker that is collecting data that I can't upload anywhere, that isn't providing stats for the walking challenge that I'm currently participating in, and within 14 days that data is going to be gone, so thank you so very much for issuing out such an abysmal update that has essentially rendered my 25-month old (and therefore JUST out of warranty - how convenient!) tracker useless. Miffed doesn't even BEGIN to cover it. I think I might be swapping to a tracker by a different manufacturer because with all the problems Fitbits seem to exhibit in one way or another it's not worth the hassle....

Ricardo, thank you for reaching out to me about this issue. Yes I have done all the suggestions you mentioned and nothing has helped a d actually from what I'm hearing about this update I don't think I wish to update it. It makes me nervous if it affects how my Charge 2 will work in the future. So I would prefer to not do it at all. IF that's possible.  Is there a way to have it quit showing up in my dashboard everytime I go on to sync my data?

I seem to be having the same problem as everyone else.  I accepted the update for my charge 2 and now my Fitbit won’t hold a charge.  I’ve tried the hard reset multiple times and the only answer from Fitbit was you are out of warranty and here’s a discount.  My Fitbit worked perfectly until I accepted the update.

G-d, I hope I'm luckier than most of you.  I saw the update notice this morning and blindly applied it.  When the update completed, my fitbit seemed to be working, and it's synching to my phone.

What I don't know from the update page, is how often these updates come out.  I had purchased my fitbit in December 2018, and this is the first time I've had a notification come up regarding a firmware update.  Does this mean I got an accumulation of updates, or is this the first update since December?

Nothing to be excited about if it cant even be installed. Tried every troubleshooting suggestion, yet nothing has worked. 😠

My Fitbit Charge HR 2 hasn't registered HR properly since I updated the firmware update last weekend and now it has completely stopped registering heart rate. I never had any issues prior to the update.

Support had no solutions for me other than to restart the device and turn HR off and on again, which I had already tried.

How is it that in this day and age that a company can release a firmware update that breaks a large number of it's devices? (And then expect it's customers to by a replacement no less)

Unfortunately this is normally the sign of a decaying company. I watched happen it with Nokia and Jawbone. The software updates becomes and rife with errors because all the good engineers have abandoned ship or the company is no longer willing to pay for talent. Next is you will find customer service is virtually impossible to contact and there is no direct contact avenue. I would be hesitant in buying new devices from a company at this stage as you likely find yourself holding a device with no company to support it.

It took me a dozen goes to get this update installed (which I now regret) as the device has been acting quirky ever since.

I guess it will end up consigned to the drawer with my Nokia N97 and Jawbone Up2 band in the near future.

G-Man_505, a very interesting post.

My sleep pattern is showing normally this morning! 😄

I did nothing whatsoever to update my fitbit myself, I wouldn’t have a clue how to do so. I use my ipad, not phones like most of you.

My fitbit stopped recording my sleep properly from Friday night, showing simplified results, and  continued like that up to and including Monday night.

This morning I can see full results, 5h.59 mins, with each type of sleep listed.

Following my first post on this forum, a post from a moderator explained that my heartbeat, and therefore my sleep, wasn’t recording properly because I didn’t have my fitbit correctly on my wrist!

Of course that was plain silly - to suggest that I would suddenly start wearing it differently after wearing it correctly for months, exactly when so many other peoples’ fitbits went wrong................. oh, and I absolutely didn’t wear it any differently last night when I came to bed, yet it worked!

The fitbit company did a disservice to their customers and to their staff. They put in place an unsafe update and hid behind staff who had to do their best to try to pacify huge numbers of fitbit owners who suddenly found their fitbits weren’t working correctly.

I’m assuming that the fitbit company has either reversed their update or has managed to fix the problems caused by it.

I hope that there will now be many more posts on here from people saying that their fitbits have reverted to working normally.

I hate to be overly cynical...but seeing a firmware update available for a 3 year old device which hasn't had any other updates in as long as I can remember is a red flag. I came on here to see why there is an update before touching it.

The official update page merely says "VERSION 22.58.0 - This release includes bug fixes and improvements.". I haven't had any significant bugs so why update?

The only improvement I can see them bothering with after the Charge 3 has already been out for a good while is an improvement to the in-built obsolescence. It would seem that all the bricked units are proof that this could be the case.

I've already decided I won't be buying another Fitbit when this one kicks the bucket. I love having the stats for everything I've done every day for the last 6 years (Flex before Charge 2), but the cost of a new one isn't worth it, especially if an update breaks my current one.

Again, just playing devil's advocate.

Personally I think it's just a badly executed update.

Looking back at my emails for the last couple of months they've been trying to shift their remaining Charge 2 special edition stock (which to clarify, is the model I own that I'm having problems with). Purposely bricking brand
new 2 month old Charge 2 special editions would be ridiculous.
