Issues with Custom food logging (Calories revert to 0)

ANSWERED
Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

We've aware of an issue when entering a custom food, total calories are dictated by whatever the number is for "Calories from fat". If you have 0 calories from fat, you will see 0 Calories.

We’re currently working to resolve it and hope to have a fix soon. Be sure to keep your Fitbit device and app up-to-date to ensure you receive the quickest resolution. We're sorry for any trouble. We appreciate your patience and look forward to getting you back on track.

I found a work-around. After I log my custom food, I go to my computer and click on that particular food item, use the edit button and then add the calorie count and save.  You need to use the refresh feature on your computer and then it adds the calorie count.  It's a pain in the butt, but for the short term (hopefully) it seems to work.

fitbit.com - please fix this issue.  It's getting very frustrating!

Thanks for that
I’ll give it a try

So basically, we should use the computer for adding items in period? I'll try that. Thanks!
I can't believe it's this hard to fix. This is my first being on Fitbit with a problem and it's taking a bit to fix it. Not great.

Hi there
I see you are a jogger! I caught a hint of smugness in your post almost like a vegan. Haha just kidding and keeping it light.
I understand the frustrations, it was these frustrations that compelled me to post in the first place.
There are two work arounds one in the app and one on the website.
The app work around suits me best as even though it feels the wrong info will be added in fact it does not. Entering the total cals in both the cals from fat and total cals will update correctly. I was worried that it would add all the calories as fat calories but it does not and you can check this after adding a new food and adding it to a meal you will see the little colour wheel in that page showing the percentage of fat carbs protein. By recording these values before and after you will see it update the correct percentage for fat. (Take grams of fat and divide by 9 if I recall correctly) my assumption is that when the total cals are added and then the grams of fat that calories from fat does it’s calculation from that box and transposes the values. Somehow that cals from fat is looking for a value that has now changed meaning it will zero out the cals. I front write apps but I imagine it is similar to FMP and an updated link to a the wrong space but with a different value could be hard to find (he says being as gracious as possible) I have built the exact same field process in excel.
Looking through previous notifications it seems in jan this year there was an announcement that the app was rolling back to a previous version due to technical difficulties, providing tone to fix the problem. There is a lot of checking before a version is released however I guess not for the custom food area. So this works and only has the inconvenience of having to remember to fill in the total cals in two places and watching out for it to be rectified without notice and muck you up again.
The other option is to use the web interface. This works fine but you need to keep refreshing , it seems slow and cumbersome to me and to be honest o don’t like it. Seems such a long slow way to get to enter some info. I date to say they should consider updating the processes and data flow.
The bar code reader seems like a good idea but again the database seems so far out of date and in my opinion never updated. This may seem like a big job it is in fact not. Supermarkets and freight forwarders. It only takes a person from Fitbit data and an executive from Fitbit global partnerships to sell the idea of updating the bar-codes at the supermarket HQ at the same time the supermarket chain does. Tempt with advertising and integration with the supermarkets on line ordering. AnywaY I am likely to be over-simplifying things and waffling on like a personal trainer lurking at the gym trying to strike up a conversation with the new members. You know the ones those that start a conversation they were not involved in with “Well as a personal trainer I have some insights into getting the most from your workout.
Hope it helps and remember using the app work around is only filling in one more field for the meantime.

Hi Amy
Sorry I’m too old to know my yolo from FML to LMCO so I don’t know what ITIL is and if you are being kind or mean. It don’t matter if you are being either to me I’m too old to care but I kind of do want to know.
The real good news is that in this thread of frustrations and disappointment, being the place you ended up you thought it worthwhile to comment on my phrasing than the issue. If I didn’t know better I would say you are flirting with me, stop it, it’s just unfair on the
others.
Amy you have made my day thank you and tell your friends.
If you could let me know what ITIL is as understanding it Will help me use it in a sentence correctly.

Computer ok but you can use the app. Simply add the total calories to the space with Calories from fat. It will calculate the calories for fat correctly, maintain the integrity of the custom food, data update the dashboards correctly.
I don’t like yawing the computer web thing either so clumsy. In the app only 1 extra box to fill in.

That help a little?

Stop it, yes you are right I have lost some weight and I looking younger you say? I know what you are thinking now and you are right! My goatee is magnificent. !!

Hope this will get fixed soon. I’m new to this, having just purchased a Charge 3 a month ago, which I use with iPhone 6sPlus. I’m aiming to lose just a little weight and your app, when I log food eaten, shows that I should be acing it - but I am not. The custom food/meal options don’t work at all. I’m wondering if anything I put in gets added properly??Also it should be a very simple bit if coding to get kJ happening throughout the App (and on the Charge3!) very slack to put graphs in units of Cal when chosen units are kJ. I reckon a Year 10 kid could fix that sort of error. Get your act together, Fitbit people. No intention of paying for Premium when you can’t even get the basics right.  ☹️

In the app in the custom food area all you need to do is to add the value of the total calories into the box for calories from fat as well as total calories. This will keep the correct calories in total and calculate the correct calories from fat on your dash board. Even better than that you can, if you wish edit the custom foods that are rubbish and then go day by day and amend your food diary historically. (I know)
I am not a Fitbit person and new to it as well I just worked it out and posted here. Best of luck and you are most welcome (he says with the smugness of a vegan personal trainer)
Peace love and happiness and good luck on your journey

Yip on the iPhone mon amigo.

Create a custom food or edit one you have in the app on the phone.

Extend the “Switch to detailed View”
And when you are filling in the values simply add the total calories value to the “Calories from Fat” box and then save
You will see immediately the calories remain and if you check your dash board you will see that the value fat percentage is now spot on.

I don’t work for Fitbit, I just had a fiddle with it and solved a work around. I am trying to be of assistance to the community cause the Fitbit answers seem difficult or a guess at best. It will work with iPhone 6. Don’t believe me
If this (and it will) provides a work around where you only have to fill in one extra field then how about you make a donation to the RSPCA in your country and area. Any amount that you chose. If and let’s see if you lack the resource oh and you can go back historically and edit the values

I have this issue, but not just for calories. I started a new diet with a nutritionist with shakes so I went through each chart, did the math, and created a log entry for each one so it would be easy for me. I spent at LEAST an hour doing this, to find out none of the numbers stayed. I am about to update the app so I hope this is fixed, or I will have to use another app to track my intake for the nutritionist.
