Fitbit Update: 3/6/19

Hello everyone!

We have some updated troubleshooting suggestions we'd like for all of you on Android Pie (9.0) to try.

First, turn off Background Restrictions/Limitations: Phone settings > Apps & Notifications > Fitbit app > Background restrictions or Background limits.

Then, disable battery limitations:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Fitbit app > Advanced > Battery > Battery optimization
  2. Change view to All apps
  3. Search for Fitbit app
  4. Choose Not optimized

Please give the steps above a try to improve syncing with your Fitbit device and Android 9.0 OS. We're still researching and testing out long-term solutions to this ongoing syncing issue. We thank you for all your patience while we continue to work on this effort.

Fitbit Update: 10/3/18

Hey Everyone!

Our team is still working on implementing a longterm fix for syncing with Android devices on Pie (9.0).

For the background syncing issue, I have posted an update in the other floated thread which you can find here

We released Fitbit for Android version 2.80 today which contains improvements for that syncing issue.

I'll make sure to keep you all updated with more information, as soon as I have it available. We're still working on this and I really appreciate everyone's patience.

Fitbit Update: 9/26/18

Hey everyone!

Thanks so much for your patience and cooperation. We are aware of the issue and working with Google on a solution.

I will continue to provide updates here, so keep an eye on this thread.

Fitbit Update: 9/10/18

Hi, everybody!

Thanks for your patience while our team continues to work on improving syncing for those on Android Pie (9.0). They are actively working on this and for the time being, I recommend you keep the Fitbit app updated on the latest version for best syncing results. Right now that is version 2.78, so if you're not on this version please update! Also, another troubleshoot we recommend is performing a restart on your phone.

When there are more improvements made in the future I'll announce them here. Stay tuned and subscribed to this thread.

Fitbit Update: 8/19/18

We have escalated these syncing issues for those who are now using Android Pie (9.0) to our team for investigation. There aren't any updates at the moment, but rest assured we will keep you informed in this thread when more information is available.

Thanks for your patience!

Fitbit Update: 8/11/18

Hi, everyone! Thanks for stopping by the Community Forums. Smiley Happy

Seems like many of you who updated to Android Pie (9.0) are now having trouble syncing your Fitbit trackers. I'm going to escalate this to our team so they can look into it.

In the meantime, please update the Fitbit app to version 2.76.1 if you haven't yet. Let me know if that changes the syncing behavior. Please follow this thread for updates. I'll keep you all posted here!

No... This morning I can't get the Alta HR to connect to my Bluetooth on my Pixel at all. I've shut off my Bluetooth, used the "forget" to remove the Alta HR and uninstalled / reinstalled the fitbit app and restarted my phone at least four times with no success. Very frustrated!

Update:

-My Google Pixel 2 running stock Android Pie with Fitbit app 2.81 fails everything time to sync my Fitbit One and never failed to sync when it was Android Oreo. With Pie sync ends with a red circle explanation mark even after restarting Android, un installing and reinstalling the Fitbit, and clearing the app data and cache...

-My Google Nexus 5X running stock Andoird Oreo with Fitbit app 2.81 syncs everytime with the same Fitbit One.  It has never failed to sync.

-My Asus tablet running stock Andoird Nougot with Fitbit app 2.81 syncs everytime with the same Fitbit One.  It has never failed to sync.

Thanks for being sobpatient and reading through my posting to find out that really nothing has changed.  I just wanted to keep my post count up.  I am really doing nothing to fix the problem.

Nope!

Have you tried to factory reset the tracker as well?

My hypothesis is that the faulty sync occured by using 2.80 app sends the tracker in a state that cannot be handled by the 2.81 app.

It's worth a try.

It is an issue Fitbit is well aware of.  In another post the developers are working with Google on fix for the issue.  The temporary solution is to restart the Google phone and sync your device right away. It only works for that instance. The sync all day does not work with PIE.

I find for me running Android pie on a pixel II XL that I can sync if I restart my phone. Nothing else but that. I have to do that every day, no sync until I do that. Last night I kept my phone in the same room as the Fitbit and no restart necessary. Don't know why.

Seems like the latest update (10/25) finally worked for me. So far it has been 2 days and my charge 2 is still syncing with my OnePlus 6 with pie.  Hopefully future tweaks don't take this away.

Before this update I had unpaired the charge 2. So maybe that helped.

Something is working. I also have a Oneplus 6 on pie and when running the
GPS worked. That was the first time on pie for me.

It seems that the statement "The sync all day does not work with PIE" is not correct: for example my tracker and phone can sync all day with PIE (and also many others' devices too), while some others' devices not. It is hard to determine, since the penetration of Android 9 is lower than of Android 2.3 at the moment, does not reach 0.1% of the Android devices used worldwide.

I also have an One Plus 6, and the fitbit app worked perfectly untill 2 weeks ago, just befor I updated my phone to Pie. I did everything, unpair from bluetooth, Resetting, forgetting etc.

I am now just trying to pair the device again, it says that he finds the tracker but can not connect to it.

Hope it will soon....

@Gusthy   I'm really not sure why you seem dead-set on pooh-poohing everyone else's problem. There are some devices that work with Pie. We all agree on this. There are others which FitBit seems to have completely abandoned, like the One (which I have). If that's their decision, fine, but they should come out and SAY that. Personally, I don't WANT to wear a tracker on my wrist; 1) it picks up too many false positives from me typing, etc, and 2) I wear a traditional watch and don't need another thing on my wrist.

When you shoot down other people's problems, it 1) makes you look like you work for FitBit and are trying to minimize the issue, 2) makes people more frustrated about their issues, and 3) makes FitBit think the problem is less important than it is. If you want to add something that could help, fine, but please stop trying to convince the rest of us that this isn't a big deal.

No update in almost a month..

I have a Pixel 2 XL and Fitbit One and I haven't been able up do a normal sync since my phone updated to Pie at the beginning of August.

The first developer preview of Pie came out in March. Was there any testing done between then and the official release?! Maybe when Samsung phones start getting Pie enough users will be affected and something will get done.

This is beyond frustrating. At least provide some kind of regular updates. Explain why this is so hard to fix.

i returned my release day Pixel 3 XL before the return period is up and got an iphone xs and apple watch to be done with this. I love my Versa but this has been a never ending headache since the day Android Pie dropped.

I tried to help many times.

I think that if someone states that nothing works on PIE at all  and I say it is not true, but the fact is that some devices work, some are not.  It doesn't mean that I want to show the problem as smaller than it is. The original statement shows the problem bigger than it is, I just try to see the things as they as they are. Other example: someone said now that there is no update since a month. The fact is that last update occured at 25th October. I simply can't see that leaving facts for the sake of letting ourselves being angry helps anything.

Of course it is annoying that some devices don't work, I was also annoyed for two veeks.

And as I previously mentioned  no, I don't work át Fitbit, I work at. small Hungarian company which develops embedded systems. And I think my technical background differs from the average fitbit user  so I try to let people here to see the other side-s way of thinking.

I'm with @Gusthy.

Both my wife and I are using Android Pie (respectively with Pixel+Versa and Pixel 2XL+Ionic/Charger 3) and both setups are working perfectly (sync, notifications and so on).

Instead my daughter as a Moto G 4th generation with Android 7 and sometimes I have to repair her Alta HR.

Only reason I can have to explain why ours are working (if compared to other users) is that after the update to Pie I performed the factory reset on both Pixels.

So having the same problem on my Nokia 7 Plus on Android 9 using the latest android app 2.81.

Ive found Peter's fix is the only way to get a sync going until this is fixed!

  1. Forget my Fitbit in Android Bluetooth settings.
  2. Open the Fitbit app (currently on version 2.79) and start the sync process. It will say “looking…”
  3. While it is looking for your device, quickly go to Android Bluetooth settings, choose Pair New Device, and select the tracker as if to pair it for the first time.
  4. Switch back to the app and the sync process should complete.

... And does it sync ok after that or do you have to repeat every time you want a sync?

For now, it seems so. I guess i'll find out after a few more days 😕

Hi everyone. Sorry to hear about your syncing issues with your Fitbit device and your phone running Android 9. As @LanuzaFitbit said currently we don't any updates about this matter. Still I suggest for the ones who haven't try any troubleshoot to try the following:

Go to your phone's bluetooth settings and remove all devices listed there. Restart your phone and restart your device. After this try syncing them. Also, since you are using an Android device, check that your app has the necessary permissions (settings > apps > Fitbit > permissions) and make sure bluetooth and location services (GPS) are on.

Let me know how it goes!

I figured it was time to throw my experiences into the discussion as well considering I have been following since its inception.

My wife and I both have fitbit One's (both a few years old and work great). Neither of us are willing to move to a wrist tracker, so that is off the table.

We have tried the numerous suggestions in this thread to get a reliable sync with no consistent results. What we have found is as follows:

We have a Google Pixel XL, a Google Pixel 2 XL, and a recently added Google Pixel 3 XL. The Pixel and Pixel 2 always worked flawlessly with the One prior to the Android Pie release. The Pixel 3 XL shipped with Pie, so no experience with that device on a previous version of Android.

The one and only way we can get a sync without fail is to reboot the One itself (plug into charger, hold button for 10 seconds, remove from charger, press button to power on), not the phone, not the phones bluetooth, not a reset of bluetooth/network settings, not a factory reset of the phones (this has all be tried on all 3 devices). By "rebooting" the One we will get at a minimum one sync, sometimes a few more depending on app settings (keep alive widget, all day sync, etc...) but never more than a few, say less than 30 minutes of time or so. Even so, you can throw that out the window if the One ends up out of bluetooth range of the phone for even a few seconds. It seems like once the connection is no longer "live" the radio on the One locks up or something. If we want another sync, we must "reboot" the One once again...

Interesting fact, I have a coworker with the same Pixel 2 XL that we have (also on Pie) but instead of using a One he has a Charge 2. He hasn't had any sync trouble whatsoever! If I pair my One to his device, same problem that I see on my own device is present, remove my device, repair his charge 2 and all is well once again... This leads me to believe the issue has to do with fitbit abandoning support for the One, like not updating it to deal with something new in the Bluetooth stack on Pie...

One final item that seems to verify my theory. We also have access to an original Charge HR (the first model) which suffers from the same sync issue as the One, across all of these phones (including the coworkers). Seems to line up with being another abandoned product...

Very frustrating to say the least... It may be time to abandon our fitbits and Aria scale to move on to something new.
