I noticed the same problem on July 1, because my phone was hot all the time and was going through the battery very fast.. Yesterday I discovered that Fitbit had sent 130mb of cell data - someplace. The strange thing is that I only use the phone app every 3 days to sync my watch to the Fitbit database and other than that, the app is not opened supposed to be idle.
Today I deleted the app and my phone overheating is gone and my battery use has returned to normal.
I am using a Nexus 6p, Android 8.1, and my fitbit app was the version that was updated June 11. I can sync my watch via my Pc so I'll wait until fix get issued before installing again on my phone

I did the same test. Same result. No battery draining anymore and the phone back cover temperature is now normal.

I've just tried reinstalling the app so I'll see if the battery starts draining and the phone getting hot again

It will be interesting to see...
I was going to try that tomorrow.
Now, how do we notify Fitbit of this problem?

I contacted them on Twitter as well and they said they have had a number of reports of it and were looking into it

I started troubleshooting this yesterday. The most disturbing part is that even after I disabled background data usage, it continued to use it. After it used 100MB in about 6 hours today with background data disabled, I uninstalled the app.

Same problem here with my Versa and Samsung Note 8. My phone has been running very hot with an unusually short battery life for the last two days... with Fitbit talking up a huge percentage of my battery. I just uninstalled the app and it went back to normal. I'll try reinstalling the app at some point.

This is what I got from Twitter
Thanks for the info. The Fitbit Versa and your mobile device works independently and should no affect the battery life of your mobile device. The only instance to use your mobile's battery it's when you sync, when you're using Mobile Run or you have always connected and All Day Sync enabled. We recommend rebooting your mobile device and you should also check if another app is draining your battery. Keep us posted!
I sent them the link of this topic. I evidently got the lazy operator: reboot and hope for the best

Any chance 2.74 will resolve this? I see the stickied post that says it was pushed to the play store on 7/2 (still not seeing it) and saw another post where the notifications in app have been removed (what I think the problem is).

I am on Android 8.1 and am seeing this as well. No question at all that it is the latest update causing this. My phone has been consistently reporting 40 to 50 percent of battery usage by the Fitbit app.

My husband has an ionic and just confirmed the same on his phone. He is on the Galaxy S6, I'm on the Essential phone.

Same thing here. Pixel1, Android 8.1. Haven't yet found a workaround that avoids compromising notifications.

Exact same situation, Pixel 1 with a Fitbit versa. Last 3 days phone is draining battery. Went into settings and checked battery usage and it said Fitbit app 75%.

We got 2 Versa's today and upgraded from the Charge 2. Both phones have rapid battery drain since installing the Versa's and having to upgrade the Fitbit app. Everything was fine a few hours ago. All things recommended to be turned off are turned off. Phone tells me Fitbit is draining the battery.

Exactly the same problem. My Galaxy S8 has been fast to warm up and the battery is draining extremely rapidly. I believe this problem started Saturday evening for me - it's incredibly frustrating.
