I recommend the jonathan fix you can find https://abhijitvalluri.com/2018/04/fitbit-update-april-19-2018-totally-breaks-notifications-feature/
It´s working with my Versa & Mate 10

NEW UPDATE : It stopped again and now can not seem to find my Bluetooth. My Bluetooth is working fine for other things. I removed the device to try again and now can not even re-add the device.
I am fed up and it's going back. I can't decide if I should try a new one or just go back to my Blaze.

I will try that but there are 2 issues.
1) My Bluetooth has been working fine to connect to my car. I was on a call just a couple hours ago.
2) My Blaze was working fine up until I disconnected it in order to connect my Versa 2 days ago. The Versa was working fine this morning, then suddenly stopped.

I had the same error message after I moved the fitbit app from my phone memory to my sd card to free up space. When I moved it back to my phone the message went away.

@HowieChin wrote:UPDATE - solved (for me)
There's an update to Andriod System WebView. version 66.0.3359.158 (7th May 2018) - after updating, all notifications are coming in and connection seems to be steady.
Original post:
I have a Versa + Andriod (Oppo F1- running Andriod 5.1) running the latest Fitbit app (v. 2.71)
Every now and then i will stop receiving notifications and when I check in the Fitbit App -> Notifications : "Notification Service not running, A phone restart is required to re-enable notification on your tracker."
I've done this repeatedly for the past few days...and it is getting tiring because after restarting, the notification will come, and suddenly it will be nothing all again, and the cycle begins again by restarting the phone.
Solution tried:1. Installed older APK - some say it helped...not too sure.
2. Tried everythiing in this article -> http://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1610
- even with the Keep-Alive widget on, it still requires me to restart the phone.
Now, just stuck with a really heartbreaking purchase.
Hope someone has a solution, i'll keep thinking of how to overcome using other methods - if there's any good news, will be sharing here.

Hi,
I have used Fitbit Ionic since it was released. It's been a nightmare...
I canfirm that this solution worked for me. Using a Huawei P10 plus and installing Android System WebView 66.0.3359.158 worked for Fitbit app 2.71.
Unfortunaty now when updating to app version 2.72 it doesn't Work again.
I can also say that notifications worked on an off depending on app updates until updating to Fitbit OS 2. After that nothing worked.
It's a shame that Fitbit is marketing themselves as android compatible when they doesn't even support the third largest phone manufacturer in the world after Samsung and Apple.
Just fix it!

Hello there everyone, my apologies for the late response and thank you for keep me posted on how it goes this issue. So far I haven't received more updates.
I wanted to share with you there is a new version of the Fitbit app. Despite it doesn't contain an exclusive fix for this issue, it contains stability improvement that will help you for the app work better on your mobile phones. For more details please refer to this post.
Also, I wanted to reminded you that make sure your phone OS is updated to the most recent version.
I was experiencing this error with my personal account. However, a few weeks ago, I received the new update of Android 8 in my phone that along with the new version of the Fitbit app and a restart; was enough to get rid of this error. I just have to allowed all the permission for my Fitbit app had all the access for this feature to work again. Keep in mind this is just a workaround and a recommendation from my personal experience.
When more updates become available, I will keep you posted. I appreciate all your patience in the meantime.
