I had the same issue, had me exercising for 6 hrs 42 minutes b4 coming here to get help. Help was right below this onw

I am on my third replacement device and it still freezes up and won't end an exercise unless you do a complete reset.  Very frustrating!  It also does not auto recognize the number of exercises advertised and you end up having to start and try to stop each specific exercise session.

I still cannot get mine to turn off. Any further suggestions?

If u keep having trouble with it freezing up and it's still under
warranty, contact fitbit. They had replaced my first ever fitbit when it
was acting up in that 1st year.

I'm not gonna have any of my exercises auto start since they apparently
don't want to stop.

Have you tried double clicking very quickly twice, the left hand side button?

When everyone says "button" what are you referring to? I just got my Charge 3, accidentally hit start an exercise and I can't turn it off. There is a small "x" in the upper corner that you think would do the trick but it just swipes the screen. I do need instructions for this thing because the app is USELESS

The button on the left hand side of the watch

You’re right. They are useless. You actually have to double click the button on the left hand side of the watch first.

They had to make the button a little different to make the unit waterproof
which is so worth it. I love being able to swim with it. But go to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aprzLTI_uu8 At minute 4 or so he tells you
about the button and some of his other tips might help you too. This
Charge 3 unit is really pretty awesome and once you get the hang of it I
think you'll really like it.

Yes, I went through the same. The button they are referring to is the one
on the side of the watch not on the screen. To stop the exercise you push
this button twice and hit the finish prompt on the screen. Good luck!

Been there. Hit button on the side of the watch twice and then push finish on the screen. I've had some success with the exercise feature but choose to just sync the fb with my phone where I get the stats I need.

This is a totally unhelpful response. I have NO IDEA how to open the exercise app.  It opened spontaneously while I was out to dinner and then vibrated at me all through the meal, nearly driving me crazy. AND because I had to leave at a set time I had to check the time on my phone, which is far more obvious and rude. As others have said, an actual manual that gives you diagrams and step by step instructions about how to use things would be really, really helpful. I didn't even know I *had* a button until tonight. It doesn't look like a button to me, since it's recessed into the device, not sticking up as buttons usually do.

In general it is simple enough to use, but too many pushes to get things done. And did you forget to stop an expressive no way to edit afterwards, but a lot of calories burned. I actually packed mine away now for these reasons plus the floor and step count not close to accurate. I do a simple workout on a flat floor and get 15 floors claimed. I take a few steps to the kitchen and back and it adds quite some extra steps. I'm back to my withing as I have their scale and other stuff so all integrated in one app. Not that the withing is excellent either, but ok for my purpose.

I actually wrote up a little user manual. Here's part of it.

Nearly everything on this unit is done using the touch screen but there is
a button on the left side of the unit; Side Button. To make the unit
waterproof they had to make the side button with no cracks that water can
get thru so when you look at it you’ll see a slightly recessed area. Push
it and you’ll feel a little bump.

Anytime you want to back up one screen push the side button on the left
side of the unit once. Push the side button twice and it will take you
back to the clock screen.

>From the clock screen;

Swipe left once = EXERCISE/RELAX

EXERCISE – continue swipping left to view the different exercises that you
can chose from. You can change what appears here in the phone app. More
on that later.

Touch the exercise you want to do = START/SET GOAL

SET GOAL – Touch this to set a TIME or DISTANCE goal.

START – Touch this to begin that exercise. It won’t actually start until
you touch the arrow that appears. When you are done and you want to stop
the exercise you must push the side button.

Push it once = PAUSED, push the arrow on the screen when you want to resume
the exercise.

Push it twice = FINISH/RETURN

FINISH, touch this and it will show you the stats from your exercise.
Scroll down to see time, distance, heart rate, calories burned, etc. Touch
the arrow at the bottom of the stats list to get back to the Exercise/Set
Goal screen or push the side button.

RETURN, touch this to get back into the exercise.

RELAX – pulls up a guided 2 minute or 5 minute breathing exercise. Swipe
left/right to move from 2 to 5 minutes and touch the one you want to do.
It will tell you to be still and breath deep. It will give you visual cues
and vibration cues on when to exhale and inhale. It’s very relaxing! I do
it a few times a day when I need to chill. When done it will show your
Relax stats; Alignment, Heart Rate, etc. Touch the arrow at the bottom of
the stats list to get back to the Exercise/Set Goal screen or push the side
button.

I have more but this covers the area that you seemed to be struggling with
most.

Thanks. This is very helpful!! In turning off the exercise timer, I also managed to turn off the function that displays the clock face when you tilt your wrist and had to spend the morning tapping the device to see what time it was. Or getting out my phone. Both tedious when I was leading a worship service. 😊

Regards

Judy
